at SSE&RM Symposium

Los Angeles, CA – February 29, 2008 -- Valador Principal Scientist Blake Putney will receive the Best Paper Award at the 7th Annual Space Systems Engineering & Risk Management Symposium held in Los Angeles, CA. The paper, co-authored with Michael Bay and Mitchell Davis of the NASA Engineering and Safety Center, describes an “Iterative, Risk-Driven Design Approach for CEV Avionics”.

The paper details the design approach developed by Valador and the NESC, which was implemented to analyze the tasks that comprised the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) Smart Buyer Program. One of the tasks, and the one of focus in the paper, involved an iterative, risk informed, build up design approach to decide where to apply mass resources to balance safety, performance, and affordability for CEV Avionics. The buildup approach started from a simple single string architecture to assure the solution design constraints were satisfied, then considered operational alternatives as well as the addition of backup systems and redundancy to eliminate risks. The fundamental objective of the build up approach was to find the safest, most reliable and affordable system design by applying mass, power and other resources where they provide the greatest benefit for safety and mission success.

The symposium was held at the Montura Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Putney has over 30 years of experience in risk analysis technology and has made major contributions to the development of modern computerized techniques for risk assessment. He is an expert in developing relevant, elegant, and transparent risk models for complex systems, and aiding his customers in extracting useful insights that make a difference to their programs. In his current role, he is combining his management experience with PRA expertise to develop and apply new risk assessment technologies to integrate performance, cost and risk models to support NASA’s Constellation Program. Made under the authority of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, Valador developers received the award based on the "creative development of a technical innovation which has been approved for a publication as a NASA Tech Brief entitled Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Distributed Observer Network (ESMD DON)"

The Distributed Observer Network was developed by Valador as a collaborative online environment to support the mission of NASA's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD) which is to develop systems that promote and ensure the safe, sustained, and affordable human and robotic exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Danny Davis Joins Valador as New Vice President

Herndon, Virginia - December 20, 2007 -- Mr. Danny Davis joined Valador in December 2007 with almost 28 years of Engineering and Technical Management experience in the Aerospace and Information Technology industries. He currently leads Valador’s strategic thrusts into new federal civilian client markets with emphasis on Homeland Security and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.

Prior to joining Valador, Mr. Davis was Vice-President and General Manager for Pragmatics Federal Civilian Division where he headed an organization of more than 150 IT professionals, overseeing programs at the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Federal Aviation Administration. Prior to joining Pragmatics, Mr. Davis spent over 10 years in various management and engineering capacities at Titan Corporation, now part of L-3 Communications.

Early in his career, Mr. Davis worked in the Semiconductor Industry as a Product and Test Engineer for Texas Instruments, National Semiconductor, and Harris Corporation. While at Harris Corporation, he moved from semiconductors to project lead positions overseeing test activities for avionic assemblies and sub-assemblies in the Government Aerospace Systems Division on projects such as Space Shuttle, F-22, and Comanche Helicopter.

Mr. Davis received his Bachelors Degree in Physics from Murray State University in Murray, KY and has Masters Degree in Computer Science and MBA from Florida institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL.

Attendees discussed the technologies behind the Distributed Observer Network and their application in domains beyond engineering and simulation.

Washington, DC – October 2, 2007 -- Valador was awarded a contract to help the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) with the build-out of their Network Operations and Security Center (NOSC). This contract is for one year and calls for Valador to assist DTRA in upgrading its NOSC to keep up with the evolution of cyber security threats. This work includes updating DTRA’s existing conceptual design documents, developing logical and physical designs, conducting NOSC capabilities assessments, ensuring hardware and software readiness, and conducting the actual build-out.

DTRA’s mission is to safeguard America and its allies from Weapons of Mass Destruction by providing capabilities to reduce, eliminate, and counter the threat, and mitigate its effects. In this key role, DTRA requires a robust Cyber Security program to protect its IT infrastructure and the variety of critical information that it handles. Herndon, VA – June 15, 2007 -- Valador announces it has been awarded a contract with the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) out of Orlando, FL. Valador was one of five awardees on this five year Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) with a ceiling of $9,800,000. The BPA enables PEO STRI to obtain professional support for multi-year business analyses, strategic planning, organizational assessment and feasibility case studies and evaluation, change implementation services, and marketing and product improvement analyses. PEO STRI provides the Army with training aids, devices, simulations, simulators and instrumentation for training and simulation exercises in support of the U.S. War-fighter.
