Valador’s Joe Fragola speaks on safety and reliability at Langley Research Center.
Herndon, VA, March 1, 2006 -- On Tuesday, February 28, 2006, Valador Vice President and the Safety and Reliability Lead for the Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), Mr. Joe Fragola, presented "Safety and Reliability Analysis for NASA's Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS)" at NASA Langley Research Center. This talk provided an overview of how safety and reliability assessments were used during ESAS to actively influence aerospace designs. Mr. Fragola described a heritage approach to risk-based design, with particular emphasis given to a probabilistic approach to accounting for design heritage and learning in risk assessment.
Mr. Fragola has over 35 years of experience working in reliability and risk technology in both the aerospace and nuclear industries. He is a Professional Engineer, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, and currently is Vice President at Valador Inc., a Government contractor in Herndon VA. Mr. Fragola has lectured widely throughout the US, South America and in Europe. He has also given workshops and lectures in Japan, Russia, and Israel. He is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of risk analysis, risk and reliability database development, and human reliability analysis. He has participated in several dozen risk assessments, and was the Principal Investigator of the landmark, NASA sponsored, 1995 launch to landing risk assessment of the space shuttle, which still remains the only published work on the subject of integrated shuttle risk.
